CVSA's Bryan Park Soccer ComplexA "Field of Dreams"PRESS RELEASE July, 1997 Central Virginia Soccer Association P.O. Box 8615 Richmond, VA 23226 !!! FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE !!! BRYAN PARK SLATED TO GET A KICK OUT OF SOCCER RICHMOND, VA - From now on when you think of Bryan Park, think soccer. On Monday, the City Planning Commission granted the Central Virginia Soccer Association (CVSA) approval for the construction of six new soccer fields in Bryan Park. The project, called the Bryan Park Field of Dreams, will include two international fields and four smaller-sized fields, with the groundbreaking scheduled for middle to late summer. "Our goal is to develop a premier soccer complex with proper equipment and qualified instruction for all City of Richmond youth, regardless of economic resources," said Jay Paul. Local businessmen, Bruce Williams and Paul are spearheading this initiative, which has received strong support from the Richmond community, local government and national support from the United States Soccer Federation. "The Bryan Park Field of Dreams concept immediately took off, " said Williams. "Early financial backing from the CVSA, The Jackson Foundation and United States Soccer Federation have made it possible for us to begin work on the fields this summer." Williams added however that community support -- from both individuals and corporations -- will ultimately decide what kind of program the Bryan Park Field of Dreams becomes. "We're not just talking about fields here. We're talking about a total commitment to giving Richmond children the chance to play soccer. Some of these children will need shoes and uniforms to play in. Plus, we'll provide role models to coach them and transportation to and from games." In addition, Friends of Bryan Park strongly support the Field of Dreams project. Chuck Epes, past president of the Friends of Bryan Park feels this project will be an "exciting and compatible addition to the park and the community." This seems to be the sentiment echoed by all concerned. Said Paul in closing, "It's great for Bryan Park. Great for kids. Great for Richmond. Great for soccer. How can you beat an idea like that?"
